Weather Alert (Drought) – U. S. Embassy Kolonia, Federated States of Micronesia (January 12, 2024)
9 MINUTE READ
January 12, 2024

Location

  • Ulithi and nearby islands (level D2, “Severe Drought”)
  • Yap Main Islands (level D1, “Moderate Drought”)
  • Pohnpei Island, Pingelap, Nukuoro, Lukunor, and nearby islands (level D0, “Abnormally Dry”)

Event: Satellite and rain gauge data show a large swath of drier than normal conditions across the Micronesia region since December 2023.  Some towns are already experiencing water outages.  The U.S. National Weather Service in Guam predicts the ongoing El Niño will likely lead to worsening drought across much of FSM for several months, so residents should prepare for water shortages.

Actions to Take

  • Store water for use in case of a water outage.
  • Reduce water waste while cleaning, cooking, and washing yourself.
  • Report water shortage impacts to the embassy and your local Disaster Coordination Office and Weather Service Office.

Sincerely,

American Citizen Services
