The U.S. Embassy alerts U.S. citizens that on September 28, at approximately 9:15 a.m., Air Niugini flight PX073 on approach to Chuuk International Airport (TKK) landed short of the runway in the lagoon. Airport officials confirm all passengers and crew were safely evacuated and transported to Chuuk State Hospital for evaluation. The U.S. Embassy is working to confirm the identities, and the health and safety of American citizen passengers.
All operations at TKK were suspended until further notice. Consequently, United Airlines suspended their flights in and out of TKK, and will fly over TKK to other destinations. U.S. citizens with immediate travel plans to or from Chuuk should check with their airline for information on changes to flight schedules. U.S. citizens impacted by this event should follow directions from local officials, and adjust travel plans as need.
